What is the difference between SS316 and SS316L

The difference between SS316 and SS316L is that of suffix 'L'. This L stands for low carbon.

Chemical composition of SS316 and SS316L

Cmax    P       S         Si      Mn     Cr        Ni      Mo

     SS316       0.08   0.045   0.03   0.75   2.0   16-18   10-14   2-3
     SS316L     0.03   0.045   0.03   0.75   2.0   16-18   10-14   2-3

From the above table we can see that SS316L has a 0.03% max carbon where as SS316 has a 0.08% max carbon. The low carbon in SS316L improves its wediability at high temperature. In a corrosive environment,SS316L used to minimize intergranulor corrosion.

  3. Apart from this, 316L is also preferred over other steels in nuclear industry for applications in radiation (particularly neutron radiation) environment, as carbon in steels gets radioactive; C-12 takes up neutrons to become C-14. The low carbon content of 316L helps minimize this effect.

  7. How Much Temprature Material 316 resist Against Heat?

  8. Resistance to oxidation, or scaling, is dependent on the chromium content in the same way as the corrosion resistance. Most austenitic steels, with chromium contents of at least 18%, can be used at temperatures up to 870°C and Grades 309, 310 and 2111HTR (UNS S30815) even higher. Most martensitic and ferritic steels have lower resistance to oxidation and hence lower useful operating temperatures. An exception to this is the ferritic grade 446 - this has approximately 24% chromium, and can be used to resist scaling at temperatures up to 1100°C.

  9. Sir i need a ss material for contact type water level sensor . plz tell me which is suitable material (good electricity conductor and long life and cheap ).life about two years. Ss202- ss316l

  10. SS316- %C = 0.08
    SS316L-%C = 0.03

Is this makes any effects on product because its an bio compatible material.?

    1. Dear Raju,
are you talking about effect of C on SS product or effect of C on the some thing kept in container made of SS?
As we know that, with increase of C, strength of materials increases. hence SS 316 strength will be higher than SS 316L.
